Ski Resorts in Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, is a winter wonderland for skiers and snowboarders. With its stunning mountain views, mild winter weather, and a variety of resorts to choose from, there's something for everyone. Let's explore the three main resorts in the area:

1. Bear Mountain

Located in Moonridge Area of Big Bear Lake, Bear Mountain offers a wide range of terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. From beginner slopes to challenging expert runs, there's something for everyone.

Location

Located in Moonridge, Bear Mountain is a good choice for those staying in Moonridge or nearby. If you're planning to visit other attractions in Big Bear Lake, such as the Alpine Zoo or the Bear Mountain Golf Course, consider staying in a cabin located in Moonridge. If your cabin is close enough, you may be able to walk to the resort. However, keep in mind that Moonridge is hilly and some streets can be very steep making the walk a little more challenging, especially in the winter when roads are covered in snow or ice. So be sure to plan accordingly.

Best Known For

Family-friendly atmosphere, variety of terrain, and events.

Rentals

Ski and snowboard rentals are available on-site.

Tips

Consider purchasing a season pass if you plan on visiting multiple times. Bear Mountain also offers lessons for beginners and intermediates.

2. Snow Summit

Snow Summit, located near the Village in Big Bear Lake, is another popular resort known for its night skiing and snowboarding. It offers a variety of terrain, including beginner slopes, intermediate runs, and expert terrain.

Location

Located just west of Bear Mountain, Snow Summit is a convenient option for those staying near the Village area. Some cabins are close enough to walk but keep in mind that while less hilly than Moonridge, there are a few streets that can be challenging in the winter.

Best Known For

Night skiing, variety of terrain, and events.

Rentals

Ski and snowboard rentals are available on-site.

Tips

If you're a night owl, Snow Summit is a great place to hit the slopes. Don't forget to check out the events calendar for live music and other activities.

3. Running Springs Resort

For a smaller, less crowded experience, consider visiting Running Springs Resort. Located in Running Springs, this resort offers a more intimate atmosphere and is a great option for families and beginners.

Location

Located in Running Springs, this resort is a bit further away but offers a quieter atmosphere and is a good option for those seeking a more affordable experience.

Best Known For

Smaller, less crowded atmosphere, beginner-friendly terrain.

Rentals

Ski and snowboard rentals are available on-site.

Tips

If you're looking for a quieter experience, Running Springs Resort is a great choice. Across the street is the Nordic Ski Area, perfect for snowshoeing.

Parking and Transportation

Parking can be limited at Big Bear Lake resorts, especially during peak times. To ensure a smooth parking experience, consider the following options:

  • Resort Parking: Each resort has its own parking lot, but it's advisable to arrive early to secure a spot, especially on weekends and holidays.

  • Additional Parking Lots: There are additional parking lots available in the area, often with shuttle services to transport you to the resorts. These shuttles can be a convenient way to avoid the hassle of finding parking at the resorts themselves but can also be time consuming.

  • Village and Street Parking: There are parking lots located near the Village however walking to the resorts would be quite difficult, especially in the winter, and advised against. Street parking is also extremely limited and highly unlikely for you to get a spot nearby.

  • Big Bear Lake Trolley: The trolley offers free shuttles to and from the resorts and other areas in town. This is a great option for those who want to avoid driving altogether or for those who are staying in areas without convenient parking.

Big Bear Lake Lift Tickets

Day Tickets: You can purchase day tickets for each resort.

Season Passes: For frequent skiers and snowboarders, consider purchasing a season pass. The Bear Mountain and Snow Summit season pass allows you to visit both resorts. The Ikon Pass provides access to approximately 50 resorts worldwide, including Big Bear Lake.

Food and Drink

You'll find plenty of options for food and drink at each resort. Each resort has a mix of restaurants, snack bars and drink stations. This makes it easy to stay at the resort to have lunch or a quick bite. If you do want to leave the resort, your best option is to head to the Village where you can find a variety of restaurants and coffee shops.
