The Big Bear Discovery Center, despite its name, isn't technically located in Big Bear Lake itself. You'll find it in Fawnskin, on the north shore. But don't be fooled by the name! This unique center combines the functions of a visitor center and a nature center. It serves not just Big Bear Lake, but the entire surrounding area, including the San Bernardino National Forest. So, whether you're looking for visitor information or want to learn about the local ecology, the Big Bear Discovery Center is your one-stop shop for adventure.
Just like any good visitor center, the Big Bear Discovery Center is an informational place to learn about the surrounding San Bernardino Mountains. You can find informative exhibits about the region's fascinating flora and fauna which are also serves as a excellent activity and experience for kids.
If you plan to take any hikes while visiting Big Bear Lake, be sure to head to the Discovery Center and learn more about the trail. Trail maps and brochures are available but you can also get help from the staff who can guide you on which hikes to take.
The Big Bear Discovery Center also offers weekly guided nature walks and in the summer months host Music in the Mountains concerts at the outdoor amphitheater.
As mentioned earlier, the Big Bear Discovery Center is actually located in Fawnskin on the north shore. Unless you are renting a cabin in Fawnskin, you most likely will be staying in Big Bear Lake or Big Bear City which is on the south side of the lake, near the Village. Since you can drive around the entire lake, you can access the Discovery Center from either direction. I recommend that you enter from one direction and leave in the same direction so that you complete the entire loop. Its a very scenic drive with many places to stop so be sure to budget in some time for sight seeing.
When you arrive at the Discovery Center, you will find a large parking lot that is free to park. You can also leave your car there while exploring the area after visiting the Discovery Center.
The Discovery Center has a short nature trail, which is great for families and those who are just looking to dip their toes in nature. If you are looking to take on a longer hike or a few short ones, there are a handful of trails that can be easily accessed from the Discovery Center. You can easily park at the Discovery Center and spend the day exploring the trails.
If you are in for a longer but easy trail, I highly recommend The Alpine Pedal Path which is a trail that runs along the north shore. It is a relatively flat, paved trail with amazing views of the mountains and lake. It is easily accessed from the Discovery Center. From the Discovery Center, head to the Cougar Crest Trailhead, then take Alpine Pedal Path Spur Trail which will connect to the Alpine Pedal Path. Read more about the Alpine Pedal Path.
If you are in for a challenge, you can take the Cougar Crest Trail. The end of the trail connects to the Pacific Crest Trail, so the adventure can continue if you are up for even more of a challenge.
The Woodland Interpretive Trail is also nearby, however it requires a walk to the trailhead from the Discovery Center. This is a great trail for those who want to learn more about the local plants and animals as there are a series of informative signs along the way.
The Big Bear Discovery Center is located at 40971 North Shore Drive in Fawnskin, California. It is open Thursday through Monday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is entirely free, making it an accessible and budget-friendly option for families and explorers alike.
