How to Watch Fireworks from the Water
- Rent a Pontoon Boat: One of the best ways to experience the fireworks is from the water itself. Since the fireworks are launched from a barge near Pineknot, consider renting a pontoon boat for the ultimate viewing experience. Many marinas offer
boat rentals specifically for the 4th of July, so be sure to book yours well in advance! Pontoon boats offer comfortable seating, plenty of space to spread out, and the ability to tune into the synchronized radio broadcast for a truly immersive experience.
- Rent a Kayak or Canoe: For those lucky enough to have a lakefront cabin, the ultimate convenience awaits. Paddle out on a kayak or canoe from your own dock or shoreline for a truly unique perspective. Imagine the fireworks reflecting off the calm water, creating a mesmerizing light show right outside your door! You can find cabins available on the south shore for rent but these book fast and well in advance.
Best Lakefront Parks to Watch Fireworks
The south shore offers convenient access for those staying at hotels and cabins near the lake, be prepared for heavy congestion. Traffic and parking will be difficult. We recommend heading to one of the parks early in day so that you can grab a parking spot and a nice grassy/sandy spot to view the fireworks.
The best
parks in Big Bear Lake to get a view will be:
Each of these parks are located just off Big Bear Blvd and have lake front access. Our recommendation is to head to Ski Beach to access the sandy beach for a completely unobstructed view.
Best (and worst) Areas to Watch Fireworks
If you're fortunate enough to snag a cabin rental in Big Bear Lake, you might be wondering if you can skip the crowds and enjoy the fireworks from your own private balcony. Here's the key:
location matters!
- Lake Area: Cabins with the best unobstructed views will be directly on the lakefront or very close to the shoreline. However, keep in mind that Big Bear Lake is known for its majestic pine trees. These beauties, while undeniably charming, can significantly obstruct the view the further you get from the water's edge.
Don't count on a clear view from your cabin even if it's a block or two away from the lake.
The good news? These cabins often have easy access to the waterfront, allowing you to walk down for a clear and unobstructed view of the show.
- Moonridge and Village Areas: Cabins located near the ski resorts or deeper into
Moonridge will most likely not have any visibility of the fireworks display. However, there's a slight chance of redemption! Some Moonridge cabins are built at higher elevations and have expansive balconies on the second or third floor. These might offer a glimpse of the fireworks. Pro tip: Always check with the rental company before booking to confirm if the cabin offers a view of the fireworks display.
Escape the Crowds: Best North Shore Viewpoints
- Alpine Pedal Path: For those seeking a relaxed atmosphere and potentially less traffic congestion, the north shore offers a fantastic alternative. Here, you'll find the
Alpine Pedal Path which is paved path that winds its way along the north shore. From the trail you can access the sandy beach and get unobstructed views of the lake and fireworks. Parking is available along Stanfield Cutoff or at the official Alpine Pedal Path Trailhead (740 Stanfield Cutoff, Big Bear, CA 92314). The path also leads to the scenic Juniper Point Picnic Area, another popular spot for firework viewing. While parking at the picnic area can be limited, you can easily walk there from the main path.
- Serrano Campground:
Just west of the Alpine Pedal path is the Serrano Campground (400 Big Bear Blvd, Big Bear Lake, CA) where you can reserve a campsite. From the campground, the shore is easily accessible. Remember, campsites book up fast, so plan well ahead.
- Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventure: For a more secluded experience, consider a short hike. On the south shore, Towne Trail leads to a scenic overlook at Forest Service Road 2N08, offering
stunning panoramic views of the lake and fireworks. The north shore has Polique Canyon (2N09), accessible via Stanfield Cutoff, North Shore Drive, and Polique Canyon Road. Park along Polique Canyon Road (dirt road) and enjoy the show. Remember: An
Adventure Pass is required for parking at both locations.
Unique Experiences to Watch the Fireworks
- Above the Boom at Snow Summit: Purchase a ticket to Snow Summit's
Above the Boom event!
Watch the fireworks a chairlift! This special event includes a scenic chairlift ride, delicious BBQ dinner, live entertainment, and breathtaking panoramic views of the fireworks display from the mountaintop.
- Have Dinner at The Pines Lakefront: Enjoy dinner on the lake before the show! The Pines is located right on the Lake offering some of the best views. But be sure to grab a reservation in advance because its a popular dining spot, especially on the 4th!
Fourth of July Rush: Traffic and Parking Tips
The 4th of July is one of Big Bear Lake's busiest holidays, and with that comes heavy traffic congestion. Expect delays throughout the day, especially around the lake and the Village.
Don't be surprised if even back roads and neighborhood streets get crowded as people try to find alternate routes. Here are some tips to navigate the festive frenzy:
Road Closures and Restrictions
- The Village: The Village will be
closed to vehicle traffic during the fireworks show before and after the fireworks.
- Pineknot Avenue will be closed from the Village to the Marina. If you plan on dining in the Village before the festivities, factor in parking and walking distance when making your reservations. Remember, post-fireworks traffic will be intense as well.
- Big Bear Blvd: Traffic controls will be implemented on Big Bear Blvd during the fireworks display,
restricting left turns. This can significantly slow down traffic flow.
Where Park
While parking is available throughout Big Bear Lake, finding a spot on the 4th of July can be a challenge. Be prepared to walk a bit from your designated parking area to your viewing spot. Here's a breakdown of key areas:
- The Village: The Village will be
closed to vehicle traffic during the fireworks show so no parking will be allowed along Pineknot, however you can still park in the surrounding lots but remember it will still be hard to find a spot and post-fireworks traffic will be intense as well.
- Parking Lots and Parks: Parking lots near the lake and popular viewing areas, including parks, will fill up quickly. Early arrival is crucial if you plan to park in these designated areas.
- Use the Trolley:
Big Bear Lake offers a convenient
free trolley system that can help you avoid traffic woes.
Consider utilizing the trolley for transportation between your cabin, restaurants, and viewing locations. Additionally, walking and biking are great options for getting around, especially if you're staying within the Village area.
The Bottom Line: Patience is key when it comes to parking on one of Big Bear Lake's busiest day. By planning ahead, considering alternative transportation, and being flexible with your arrival and departure times, you can minimize your stress and maximize your enjoyment of the spectacular fireworks display.
Happy 4th of July! See you soon!
